Cross Stitch
Cross Stitch
Cross stitch is a form of embroidery where all the stitches that are made are crosses (i.e. X). These crosses are embroidered on to material to make designs and pictures. To make a cross here the person who is doing cross stitch will have to stitch two overlapping diagonal stitches.
Cross stitch was particularly popular in Victorian times and is nowadays enjoying an increase in popularity again with both children and adults. There are various ways of making a cross stitch picture. These include:
1. Design your own - here you take your tapestry and simply design your own picture or design.
2. Counting stitches - here you follow a pattern or chart which tells you where crosses should be made to make up an image or picture.
3. Stamped cross stitch - here a design or image is pre-printed on to fabric and you basically cross stitch over it.
Some people will buy separate supplies of threads, needles, embroidery hoops, charts and tapestry fabric to make cross stitch pictures. Others prefer to buy kits that contain all the materials and instructions that they need to make a specific picture or design. Cross stitching can be used to make all kinds of things from pictures to cushions.
